Summary:
This guide examines good practices in municipal solid waste and sewage sludge treatment in Chinese cities from a greenhouse gas mitigation perspective, with a particular focus on reducing methane emissions. It analyzes the current status and challenges of waste management in China, then presents case studies from both domestic and international cities that demonstrate successful approaches across three areas: integrated municipal solid waste management (including source reduction, classification, food waste treatment, incineration, and landfill gas recovery); low‑carbon sludge treatment and disposal (emphasizing anaerobic digestion and co‑digestion with food waste); and monitoring, reporting, and verification systems for waste sector emissions. The guide identifies four key enabling factors for effective implementation: tailoring practices to local conditions, coordinated urban planning, legislative and policy integration, and multi‑stakeholder engagement. It includes policy recommendations to help Chinese cities improve waste management while simultaneously reducing greenhouse gas emissions and environmental pollution.
