Beyond Carbon

Summary:
This policy brief provides an overarching overview of non CO₂ GHG emissions (methane, nitrous oxide, and F gases) across all major sectors in China—energy, industry, agriculture, waste, and buildings. It synthesizes historical trends, existing mitigation policies, and future projections, finding that non CO₂ emissions have been rising and will continue to do so without stronger action. Through scenario modeling, the brief demonstrates that enhanced mitigation efforts can achieve earlier peaking and deeper reductions, but significant emissions will remain by 2050. It identifies key mitigation actions by gas and sector, and recommends developing a national non CO₂ strategy, setting specific reduction targets for methane, nitrous oxide, and F gases, and strengthening policy implementation and data systems.
