Summary:
This policy brief examines the progress and challenges in reducing fertilizer use in China's agriculture, a major source of nitrous oxide (N₂O) emissions. It quantifies the contribution of the agricultural sector to national N₂O emissions, reviews China's existing policy framework promoting fertilizer reduction and efficiency, and analyzes national trends in fertilizer application and related emissions. It then identifies persistent challenges, such as high application intensity and barriers to adopting precision farming and organic fertilizers, to formulate targeted policy recommendations.
